4 of the World’s Preferred Islands are in Greece
Among summer break destinations, islands always hold a special place in travellers’ hearts. That’s because they offer that magical combination that makes the holiday world go around: sun, sand and sea.
But the Greek islands offer much more:
Varied landscapes and in many cases rare historical sites, interesting traditions and customs combined with a relaxing European lifestyle, hospitable people and – of course – great food.
So, it’s not surprising that the Greek islands are a long-standing favourite holiday destination. But now it’s official: According to Travel & Leisure, a monthly travel magazine based in New York City, New York, with 4.8 million readers, four Greek islands rank among the Top 5 islands in Europe, and among the Top 15 in the world.
Looking at Travel & Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2019 which are based on a reader survey, you’ll find the Top 5 islands in Europe with the following scores:
- Milos, Greece (90.50)
- Crete, Greece (90.12)
- Azores, Portugal (89.77)
- Paros, Greece (89.37)
- Santorini, Greece (88.53)
On the world ranking, the Top 3 islands are
- Sri Lanka
- Palawan, Philippines
- Bali, Indonesia
with Milos ranked 4th, Crete 7th, Paros 11th, and Santorini in 14th place.
The only way to truly understand what makes these islands so magnetic is to visit them. In fact, a visit to one of the Greek islands is often followed by more, often to other Greek islands.
Many regular holidaymakers decide to acquire a holiday home either on their preferred island or on the mainland, while others go a step further and take advantage of Greece’s Golden Visa Programme, which allows investors in property to apply for a permanent residence permit in Greece. Holders of a PR permit can then easily visit the country – and the beautiful islands – visa-free, whenever they are ready to escape to an enchanting and welcoming destination in Europe.
